Étymologie
- (Adjectif) (Milieu du 15e siècle[2][3], possiblement 1454[4]) Hérité du moyen anglais orthodoxe[5], orthodox[5], emprunté au moyen français orthodoxe[1][3][4] et à son étymon latin tardif orthodoxus[1][3][4][5], lui-même emprunté au grec ancien ὀρθόδοξος, orthódoxos[1][2][3][4][5], composé de ὀρθός, orthós (« droit, conforme »)[1][2][3] + δόξᾰ, dóxă (« opinion »)[1][2][3] + -ος (« suffixe adjectival »). Le sens d’appartenance à l’Église orthodoxe grecque apparait en 1772[2], celui d’appartenance à une branche du judaïsme apparait en 1853[2].
